How to Solvent Weld Pipe and Fittings
0%
Fittings of rigid PVC can be glued to each other and onto pipes of the same material provided the sizes and tolerances are in accordance with the standardisation and tolerances given.
PVC Cement is gap filling and softens the inside of the fitting and softens the outside of the pipe to form a joint chemically. The strength of the joint is reduced if surfaces are not properly cleaned or prepared.
Newly glued parts should NOT be submitted to mechanical stresses.
PVC Pipe Solvent Weld step by step instructions
PP Female Coupler Fitting x Hose Tail
Step 1:
Firstly, cut the pipe end square. Then remove burrs and clean out swarf. A chamfer must be filed or cut approximately 3mm x 45 degrees. (This will prevent the layer of cement being scraped away as the pipe is pushed into the fitting).
PP Straight Hose Tal x Female BSP
Step 2:
Use a felt tip pen, pencil or marker to mark the pipe at the distance which the pipe will penetrate the fitting to the root/stop.

Step 3:
Thoroughly clean the surfaces of both pipe and fitting with MEK Cleaner on a clean lint-free cloth. PLEASE NOTE: It's NOT necessary to abrade pipe or fittings unless pipes are discolored/sun bleached.

Step 4:
Before applying the Cement onto the pipe, stir the cement thoroughly and quickly. Using a clean brush to approximately half as wide as the pipe that is to be joined. PLEASE NOTE: It is important to apply the cement quickly to enable assembly without excessive force.

Step 5:
Apply the Cement to the pipe and fittings in longitudinal strokes. The pipe should have a slightly thicker coat than the fitting. the prepared areas should be completely covered with cement.

Step 6:
Immediately after applying the cement, push the pipe fully onto the fitting without rotating. Hold the pipe and fitting securely for up to a minute to ensure the fitting does not slide off the pipe. Wipe off excess cement from both sides of the joint using a cleaner cloth. Lastly, replace the lids on all tins and clean brush using MEK cleaner.
PVC Pipe Solvent Weld Precautions:
- Ensure all jointing areas are well ventilated.
- Do not allow a naked flame or smoking in the jointing area.
- Cement must be used prior to its expiry date (shown on bottom of tin).
- Always wear rubber or latex gloves when applying MEK cleaner and PVC cement.
- Never dilute PVC cement.
- Always replace lids on tins when not in use.
- Always use clean brushes.
- Always use lint-free cloth or absorbent paper.
- If jointing outside, use a shelter to keep jointing surfaces dry in wet weather.
Installing PVC Threaded Pipe Fittings:
- Ensure all threads are clean.
- Apply PTFE tape to the male thread for 1 ½ turns in a clockwise direction.
- Screw the female threaded fitting by hand onto the male thread.
- It should be possible to screw the fitting on by hand for ⅔ of the thread length.
- After tightening by hand, add an extra ½ turn with a suitable tool, i.e. a strap wrench.
Installing PVC Threaded Pipe Fittings Precautions
- Use PTFE tape ONLY.
- DO NOT use thread seal paste or any other jointing compound.
- DO NOT force tightening of the joint under any circumstances.
